Introduction
Before we start, there’s something I should confess.
I actually work as a bartender at JAM HOUSE, the bar I’m about to introduce. lol
In other words, everything in this article comes straight from what I’ve seen and felt standing behind the counter every week.

JAM HOUSE is a long-established rock bar in the Kawaramachi area of Kyoto.
It focuses on legendary rock music from the 1960s through the early 2000s, and it’s one of the best classic rock bars you’ll find anywhere in Kyoto.
Another big plus is the location: it’s only about a 1-minute walk from Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station.
Whether you’re heading out for the night or catching the last train home, you can relax and enjoy yourself without worrying about the time.
Real Music from a Massive Record and CD Collection
As you can see in the photo above, all the music in the bar is played from a huge collection of records and CDs.
We, the staff, DJ with those records and CDs while making drinks and chatting with guests.
(And trust me, there are way more records and CDs than what you see in the photo.)
Here are just a few of the artists you’ll hear:
- The Beatles
- The Rolling Stones
- Led Zeppelin
- Queen
- Pink Floyd
- AC/DC
- Nirvana
- Metallica
Basically, think of it as a place that plays the bands that define what rock music is, plus plenty more.
That said, if you’re looking for the latest rock hits or J-Rock (Japanese rock), I’m sorry, but this isn’t the place for that.
JAM HOUSE is a bar dedicated to classic rock, and you won’t hear what’s trending on the charts right now.
Because of that, about 80% of our guests come from overseas. The Japanese guests we do get tend to be a little older, mostly true music lovers or people looking for a bar with real character.
One more thing:
If there’s a song you want to hear, don’t be shy — request it!
If it’s in our collection, we’ll happily play it. And if the bar isn’t too busy, some of the staff might even play it for you from their phone.
What Makes JAM HOUSE Special
In my opinion, JAM HOUSE has two things that make it stand out.
An Atmosphere You Won’t Find Anywhere Else
I’m not just saying this because I work here: this bar has a vibe you won’t find in any other bar.
Let’s be honest, old-school rock isn’t exactly what’s trending these days. But JAM HOUSE has stuck to the same concept for more than 50 years since it first opened, and that consistency has created a character no other bar can copy.
That’s why people who fall in love with the atmosphere tend to come back again and again.
(We have plenty of travelers who come every single night of their trip, and regulars who drop by every time they visit Japan.)
The most fun part of working here is watching this happen:
Travelers often open the door looking a little nervous. But within 30 minutes, they’re chatting with people from three or four different countries. By the time they leave, they’re swapping Instagram accounts and promising to “meet up again somewhere in Japan.”
This happens surprisingly often at JAM HOUSE, and honestly, it’s one of my favorite parts of this job.

You’ll quickly see I’m not making any of this up.
The Drinks Are Seriously Cheap
Again, I’m not saying this just because I’m on staff: the drinks here are clearly cheaper than at other bars.
In Kiyamachi, Kyoto’s main nightlife street, it’s normal to pay over ¥1,000 for just one drink at a bar.
But at JAM HOUSE, one drink almost never costs more than ¥1,000.
- The drinks themselves are cheap
- No time-based pricing (you don’t pay by the hour)
- No cover charge (many Japanese bars add a seat or table charge — we don’t)
- We won’t ask you to buy drinks for the staff (though if you offer, we’ll gladly accept!)
Thanks to all this, even with prices going up everywhere, JAM HOUSE is still a bar where you can drink at an unbeatable price.
Behind this is a concept the bar has kept since the beginning:
“A place where a struggling musician can walk in with just enough cash for one drink and say, ‘Hey, listen to what I’ve got to say.'”
To be totally honest, this is a bar that runs on a very tight margin, and we never know how long we’ll be around. lol
So please, come visit at least once while we’re still here!
Smoking Allowed at Every Seat — Good News for Smokers
Smoking is allowed at every seat in the bar.
If cigarette smoke bothers you, this might not be the place for you.
On the other hand, if you’ve been struggling to find somewhere to smoke in Japan, this is exactly the place you’ve been looking for.

Bonus: The Stories Behind the Photos
The four guys in this photo were a group of friends traveling to Japan from Israel.
The reason they came to the bar? They came to meet me.
Here’s the story. About two months before their visit, a young Israeli guy came to JAM HOUSE on his own.
He loved the bar (and me, apparently lol) so much that he told his friends all about his experience here.
After he got home, he told these four:
“If you ever go to Kyoto, you HAVE to go to this bar!” “And there’s a bartender there I really want you to meet.”
Because of that, the four of them made a trip to Kyoto, which wasn’t even in their original plans, just to come see me.
This is him, the guy who was traveling around Japan solo and told his friends about us. He makes music at home as a hobby, and after we met, we actually started working on a song together.
Stories like this happen way more often than you’d probably imagine. lol
Honestly, it feels like each bartender here has their own little fan club. lol

Since opening in 1969, the bar has passed through the hands of several owners.
The people behind the counter have changed over the years, but the spirit of the bar is exactly the same as it’s always been.
Final Thoughts
If you just want “somewhere to grab a drink” in Kyoto, you’ve got plenty of options.
But if you’re looking for a place where:
music sparks conversations, strangers become friends, and travelers from all over the world share the same space,
then JAM HOUSE will definitely be a bar you remember.
